PE Expectations I run my classes around the concept of the 3 R’s of Respect. Respect Yourself, Respect Others, and Respect the Environment.
Respect Yourself:
Come to class prepared
Try your best
Use self-control
Respect Others:
Listen to instructions
Be an encourager
Be a helper
Respect the Environment:
Be safe
Treat equipment and materials properly (pick them up, put them away, use them during class time like they are your own)
Use appropriate volume levels in the hallway (remember we share this space, be a good neighbor)
PE Class structure
Warm-up Activity: Students engage in an activity that prepares them for fitness.
Fitness: Students will develop qualities of physical fitness - strength, flexibility, cardio.
Lesson Focus: Students will engage in activities working on specific movement skills, having fun, working with partners and teammates.
Wrap-up: Students will revisit the main point of the lesson, have a brief cool down, and leave with a group huddle/cheer.
PE Clothing In order to optimize the PE experience it is important that your student is dressed properly to participate on PE days. For safety reasons, bare feet are never acceptable. Closed toe shoes are to be worn for PE class at all grade levels. Shoelaces must be tightened and tied, not tucked in. Jewelry will need to be removed if it presents a safety hazard to self and/or others. This will also help eliminate the possibility of lost or broken items. Students in grades 1-4 should dress in comfortable, functional clothing on PE days. Girls should wear shorts underneath dresses or skirts for PE. Students in grades 5-8 will use the locker room and change into their PE uniforms for PE class. If you have any questions or concerns concerning attire for PE, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your assistance in helping to make Grace Lutheran’s PE program safe and successful for everyone involved.
PE Grading Students are expected to participate with an “I can” attitude. No student will be belittled or marked down if they cannot perfect a skill. The main point is putting in a great effort, trying new things, and being a positive part of the class. PE should be a fun, physical break during your student’s school day. If students refuse to participate on a regular basis I will be contacting home to let you know.
(1st-4th grade) Students will be graded Satisfactory, Needs Improvement, or Unsatisfactory. This will be based completely on your student’s desire to participate. I am not expecting problems as long as your child is ready to do his/her best and is encouraging to classmates.
(5-8th grade) Everyday each student will start class with 5 points. If they transition to class appropriately, are dressed properly, participate enthusiastically, and are positive to their classmates, they will earn a full 5 points.
Points will be deducted for the following issues:
When students are transitioning to/from the locker room before/after PE, they must be considerate of their surroundings (the hallway they pass through contains pastoral offices and preschool classrooms). Students must exhibit self-control in the hallways and locker rooms during these transitions. Personal space must be observed, pushing/shoving will not be tolerated, and voice levels need to stay at an appropriate indoor volume until we are in the gym or outside. Failure to respect our environment will result in an automatic 1 point loss (further disciplinary action, and a note home will occur if this is an frequent problem).
Failure to dress in a PE uniform will result in an automatic 2 point loss. If students are dressed in athletic clothing but not a PE uniform they are expected to participate but will lose 1 point. If students borrow a loaner uniform but did not come to me prior to class, they will lose 1 point. If students do not get dressed in a timely manner (ie, wasting time in the locker room), they will lose 1 point.
If a student will not participate, is inappropriate, rude, or uncooperative, he/she will lose an automatic 2 points.
*****If a student does not dress, has no excuse, and does not participate, then he/she will receive a zero for class that day.
Note: If students realize they are missing their uniform and come to me before the school day starts or during lunch, I may have loaner uniforms that they can borrow. The purpose of the point system is to encourage students to show personal responsibility for being prepared. Students cannot borrow a loaner every PE class.
Excuses If a student cannot participate for a medical reason, a note (or e-mail) from home will excuse him/her for that day. A doctor’s note is required if the student is to be excused for a period longer than a week. Students may be required to participate in class in an alternate capacity. Please make sure that the excuse has the student’s first and last name, date(s) to be excused, and reason for excuse.
PE Content/Purpose Illinois State PE Standards Include the following areas:
Movement Skills
Physical Fitness
Team Building
Health Promotion, Prevention and Treatment
Human Body Systems
Communications and Decision Making
While all of these areas are important and will be addressed, at Grace Lutheran our primary focus during class time will be on movement skills, physical fitness, and team building. The goal is to promote confidence, healthy bodies, positive interaction, and the enjoyment of physical activity. We are hoping to build a solid foundation where your student has the freedom to try new things, find relaxation, and pure joy in movement, all to the glory of God.
